Andreas: Did anyone invite Curzon?
Four guys shake their heads and generally reply in the negative.
Pedro: He doesn't care if we do or don't, he's just as happy being alone.
Andreas hits Pedro upside the head.
Andreas: Yeah, but that doesn't mean you don't invite him. You do it for how it makes us look.
Diego: I don't get it, man.
Andreas: Look, whatever. I'll call him.
He steps outside the foyer and walks down the sidewalk several meters to get away from the milling crowd.
Andreas: Hi, Curzon? Andreas. We're checking out the Seven Oaks film festival thing, do you wanna join us? Starts at 8. Opening night thing, Juan's dad got some tickets. Yeah? Meet you at the Prince theater whenever you can get here. We're all just standing around, having drinks, waiting for it to start. Okay man. See you then.
He finds his friends inside and they resume their conversation. He's midway through a sentence to Diego when it twigs -- someone wearing white has joined their group and is listening to them.
Andreas: Curzon! Didn't see you there. When did you get here?
Curzon: Oh, just this minute.
Juan: Hey, Curzon.
Diego: Hey.
Pedro: Hey.
Nicolás: Hey.
Curzon lifts his chin slightly in their direction.
Andreas: What's going on? Brown shades?
Curzon: My dog sat on the other ones. So... it was not to be.
Andreas: Cool. Maybe your dog will make you wear colour.
Curzon looks at Andreas and says nothing. Andreas' eyebrow flickers, up-down, then he coughs a little.
Andreas: It's almost time... shall we go in?
Juan: Yeah, let's.
After a series of short films and one feature-length, the young men gather in the foyer to plan their next move.
Diego: Kent St?
Nicolás: Must we?
Juan: You're welcome to all come back to mine... not as cool as Curzon's, of course, but the 7th floor is having a house party and it might be OK. And it's so close.
Andreas: We've lost Curzon again.
They split up and wriggle through the masses to locate the stray.
Juan: THERE you are!
Curzon is engaged in conversation with a man in his sixties, who is wearing large dark shades indoors.
Curzon: He didn't like the movies much.
Juan: Hi.
Man: Hi... just been talking to your friend here.
Juan: Yeah. Curzon, you coming with us?
Curzon: OK. [To the man] Want to come along?
Man: I'd like to get out of here. OK.
They snake their way through the foyer, collecting their friends along the way. The group walks two blocks to Juan's street.
Andreas: Pardon my asking, but you are the gentleman from the Hitchcock movie?
Man: Yes, that's me.
Andreas: Please don't be offended, but I haven't seen it. I watch lots of movies, I just haven't watched all of them...
The man laughs.
Man: No, I'm glad. Really.
They reach the front doors of Juan's building where their new actor friend leans against the bricks, stooping, breathing hard.
Andreas: Are you OK?
The man drops like a dead weight on the pavement, and Andreas is the first to call for an ambulance. It arrives with sirens deafening them all, and they talk over each other to say what has happened and where they were and who the man is and where they're going. Curzon takes an ambulance officer by the sleeve.
Curzon: I know his medical history.
Ambulance Officer: Thanks. Good. Get in and sit by him. Thanks... OK everyone, move aside, we're off now. Thank you. You can call the Mercy for information in thirty minutes. Thank you for your help.
Curzon rides in the ambulance beside the man, who opens his eyes when they are driving, and lifts the oxygen mask from his mouth and nose.
Curzon: They weren't a bad sort. Why so big?
Man: I don't know. I... I just don't know.
Curzon: I'll get you home. Where are you staying?
Man: The Hyatt.
Curzon: OK.
Ambulance Officer: What in the blazes is going on here?
Curzon: He had a panic attack. He'll be OK. How do we pay for the ambulance ride?
Ambulance Officer: Fill a form out at the hospital. You can't leave. Procedure -- which we have to follow -- states that you have to be checked over by a doctor. Then you can leave if no further observation, and so on, is necessary. I really hope you aren't taking advantage of the system. People might really need this ambulance and you have both taken up our time.
Curzon: He honestly did have a panic attack. I am sorry.
Man: I'm very sorry too. Sometimes... people. I don't know.
Ambulance Officer: OK. Just wanted to check, Mr. ...
Man: Please. Just between us.
Ambulance Officer: Of course.
Man: Thank you.
Curzon fills out some paperwork at the hospital and leaves the man, who does need to stay overnight for observation. His private physician arrives and it turns out that he has a failing kidney, and that he needs a great deal of rest. Curzon bids him adieu, and calls for his car to return home. En route, he also calls Andreas.
Curzon: Sorry, Andreas. He was sort of sick. He's staying overnight at the hospital.
Andreas: That's cool. OK, well... coming back to join us?
Curzon: Not tonight. I'll have something happening at mine on the weekend. I'll let you all know. Something... great. Definitely the weather for it.
Andreas: Cool, cool. We'll see you then! Ah, hang on -- Nicolás has a question. Here he is.
Nicolás: Curzon?
Curzon: Are you coming over?
Nicolás: Yes, sure.
Curzon: See you later then.
Nicolás: Yes, OK. Bye.
Curzon: Bye.
Nicolás ends the call and gives Andreas his phone.
Andreas: That wasn't a question.
Nicolás: He knew what I was going to ask. The music for this weekend.
Andreas: Oh, cool! This is gonna be great!
Juan: Have another "beer with the animals on it", Nico?
Nicolás: Oh, shut up.
Juan pops open a beer, and slides it down the bar counter, as though it's a real bar and he's just the bartender. While he asks Andreas for more information about the weekend bash, Nicolás stares at the cityscape from the balcony, and drinks his beer, and thinks about telling his girlfriend that he likes Curzon, and thinks about how it makes him angry that everyone likes Curzon, and he doesn't want to be like everyone.
